This is my review for whole series.I have read some sport manga, and the main plot of this genre is cliché, from zero to hero. Although they all basically have the same basic plot, there are still new sport manga since Captain Tsubasa. Authors/creators of sport manga are inventing new ideas in premises, themes, or characters (oh, and illustration arts too, we are talking about manga). At a glance on the cover of the manga, everyone can guess that Eyeshield 21 offers a new main theme in sport manga: American Football.
There are more than you see on the covers. Using another oftenly used plots (shy main character, delinquent students transform into tough athletes, dark background of some characters), this manga could prolong the plots finely without many arc stories.
Unfortunately the arc stories after the national championships decline its quality, giving this manga a moderate ending.

Eyeshield 21 is a fascinating blend of Japanese and American culture through American football. What I love the most about this manga is that it gives Japan's perspective on an aspect of American culture. We see football being one of the most unpopular sports in Japan and easily looked over in favor of other sports. Meanwhile, in American its one of the most highly anticipated sports. Sport stories always have the played out David vs. Goliath thing. Where the main characters must face off against colossal and seemingly impossible opponents. All sports stories follow this pattern to the point that it's predictable. What makes Eyeshield 21 stand out from the rest is the charming characters and the strategy factor that applies to american football. Eyeshield 21 is a unique sports manga as it is one centered around American Gridiron Football. Japan obviously doesn't play much American football so this manga starts at the bare assumption that the reader knows absolutely nothing about the sport.
